Kampala

From May 14th to May 17th, the DeLoG Secretariat, along with colleagues from UNCDF and mayors from Jamaica and India, discussed the topic of national policy making to encourage developmental local governments during a working group session of the Commonwealth Local Government Conference. CLGC brings together mayors and other local government stakeholders from all Commonwealth Countries to discuss new developments in their field of work. This year’s topic was “Developmental Local Government: Putting Local Government at the Heart of Development”.

In its presentation, the secretariat first embedded the notion of developmental local government in the aid effectiveness agenda and then concentrated on providing international examples on common challenges as well as possible solutions. The challenges named related to political economy dynamics, policies not adapted to local needs and fragmented and non-harmonized development partner support. Documentation of the session will soon be available on the conference website.

Besides the working group, the secretariat also participated in the Post-2015 governance consultations in the presence of Ms. Helen Clark, administrator of UNDP. More on the secretariat’s advocacy activities on the post-2015 development agenda can be found in our latest publication.
