From 10-20 July, the UN’s High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is being held in New York City. It is the UN’s chief platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. HPLF features the voluntary reviews of 22 nation states as well as thematic reviews regarding the progress on the SDGs. The Forum will adopt a Ministerial Declaration and is expected to provide guidance, political leadership and recommendations with regard to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. It also tracks progress and addresses new and emerging challenges and issues.
At this inclusive forum, actors from the local level actively participate.
- Yesterday, the Mayor of Istanbul and President of UCLG, Kadir Topbaş, and the State Secretary for Environment for the State of Sao Paulo, Patrícia Iglecias, participated in a session on “Vertical cooperation – local authorities and national governments working together for implementation of the 2030 Agenda”, for instance.
- Tomorrow, on 15 July, Mayor of the Canadian city Kitchener and UCLG Treasurer, Berry Vrbanovic, will participate in a discussion titled “From inspiration to action: Multi-stakeholder engagement for implementation.”
In addition, a number of side events emphasise the importance of subnational actors for the achievement of the SDGs:
